PATTERN INFO

A cowl can be a little work of art as well as a way to keep the neck warm. This cowl, 'Syl,' is named for the hand-dyer Sylvia, who dyed the yarn in the samples. Using two colors, or just one, you can knit your own work of art with a striking design. The cowl is easy adjustable.

The cowl's tube shape is easy to make: you knit in the round, with only one color per round. To work the half-brioche stitch, you use the simple 'knit one below' method, for which the designer has a video tutorial. A fun knit for yourself or a perfect gift for someone else!

YARN

Fingering version: Wol met Verve (100% SW merino, 100 gr-400yds/366m). Sample yardage, 374yds/342m in colors:
CC1: Silver, 194yds/177m.
CC2: Quiet shade, 180yds/165m.

Or any Fingering weight yarn: approx. 175-202yds/160-185m of each color.

DK version: Wol met Verve Vigorous DK (100% SW merino, 115 gr-252yds/230m). Sample yardage, 411yds/376m in colors:
CC1: Roadmap, 210yds/192m.
CC2: Burned Orange 201yds/184m.

Or any DK weight yarn: approx. 197-219yds/180-200m of each color.

To archieve the best stitch definition a smooth or superwash yarn is recommended.

MATERIALS

24” (minimum 60 cm) circular needles.
Fingering: US 4 (3.5 mm), US 6 (4.0 mm). Crochet hook, US 6 (3.5 mm).
DK: US 7 (4.5 mm), US 8 (5.0mm ). Crochet hook, US 7.5 (4.5 mm).
Stitch marker, tapestry needle.

GAUGE - BLOCKED 4" (10 CM)

Fingering: in half brioche pattern, 18 stitches x 50 rows.
DK: in half brioche pattern, 16 stitches x 46 rows.
A different gauge will affect final size and yardage.

FINISHED DIMENSIONS

Fingering: approx. 23” (58 cm) circumference x 14“ (35 cm) height.
DK: approx. 23” (58 cm) circumference x 16“ (40 cm) height.

ADJUSTMENTS

The width and height of the cowl can easily be adjusted. Adjustments are provided in the pattern.

Different sizes and fits can also be achieved by altering yarn weight and/or needle size(s). The shawl will be equally pretty in a Sport or DK weight yarn.
